Right now, most of us are tied to a single utility. We don’t get to shop around or choose where our energy comes from. Our energy bills keep rising while for-profit utilities like Xcel Energy are investing in risky fossil fuel projects and padding shareholder profits. It feels like we have no say in the matter, but that’s. not. true. The Sierra Club is launching a campaign to inform citizens about the current practices and policies of Xcel Energy and the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) and what we, as citizens and utility consumers, can do to help reform utility incentives and establish clear clean energy standards. We need to chart a more ambitious and responsible path toward a clean energy future in our state. First Universalist Church of Denver will host this virtual Living for our Future presentation with Sarah Tresedder from the Sierra Club and Jeff Ackermann the former chair of the PUC. The presentation will be held on Zoom and is free and open to all.

On July 17th, the Air Quality Control Commission (AQCC) is considering whether to grant a “request for rulemaking” for a new ozone State Implementation Plan. Half of the state’s population lives in an area designated by the EPA as at risk of health impacts from high levels of ozone. The North Front Range is above and has violated EPA’s limits since 2008.

To reduce ozone and methane emissions, Colorado can and should control oil and gas emissions with much stronger regulations than are now in place.  

Oral comments made virtually on July 17th starting at 9:00, or written comments submitted by COB on July 17th are needed to help support the request.

Pursuing this regulation, which primarily focuses on stronger ozone pollution control is important. Controlling ozone pollution helps reduce climate warming pollution. This request for rule making also specifically asks AQCC consider addressing stronger methane emissions controls, a powerful source of climate warming (see the last set of bullets in the background and comment prep information by 350 Colorado at this link –  This toolkit). If the request for rule making is eventually granted, it will start a longer process for more opportunities to get involved.  

Coming up exactly one week from now, Wednesday July 16, is the deadline to submit your public comments in support of a rulemaking request at the Colorado Energy and Carbon Management Commission (ECMC). 

Thanks to a petition by WildEarth Guardians, 350 Colorado, and a coalition of public health, environmental justice, and climate advocacy groups, the ECMC is considering whether to hold a rulemaking hearing to use the Social Cost of Carbon (SCC), a science backed tool that measures the economic and public health impact of carbon emissions, to hold oil and gas operators accountable for their climate pollution. This is a crucial and necessary step to demand real climate oversight in Colorado’s oil and gas permitting process. You can send in a written comment in support of this rulemaking request by July 16.
