Is it possible to turn our militarized economy toward fighting the climate crisis?

The salon on May 26^th will feature a presentation by Miriam Pemberton of the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS).  For decades, Miriam has been working on redirecting our militarized economy in more productive directions, foremost among them toward the climate crisis – first at the National Commission for Economic Conversion and Disarmament, and then as a Research Fellow at the IPS.  With Lawrence Korb, she led the task force that produced the annual “Unified Security Budget of the United States,” and with William Hartung she edited Lessons From Iraq: Avoiding the Next War (Paradigm, 2008).

A few years ago Miriam set off on a tour of six Pentagon-dependent locations, to find out how they came to be that way and how what they make fits into the whole of the U.S. military enterprise.  The result is Six Stops on the National Security Tour: Rethinking Warfare Economies (Routledge 2023).  In her talk at the salon she will discuss the major findings of her journey, including a case showing it is perfectly possible to convert military production lines to help solve the climate crisis.  Miriam will also talk about what will be necessary to replicate such cases on a national scale.
