Salon duc Tape – Divestment from Fossil Fuels Around the U.S. – April 8th, 2022
**********
What will it take to defund corporations that profit from the extraction and use of fossil fuels?
The new Banking on Climate Chaos Report came out last week. It shows that the world’s 60 largest banks have poured $4.6 trillion dollars into the fossil fuel industry since the 2016 Paris Climate Agreement. This level of investment will clearly need to stop if we’re really going to be able to address the climate crisis. At the salon on Friday, April 8th, Giselle Herzfeld of 350 Colorado will explain how the global divestment movement is working to withdraw power from the drivers of the climate crisis. She will explain statewide efforts to defund corporations that profit from the extraction and use of fossil fuels, including Fossil Free PERA, Fossil Free Federal Reserve, Public Banking, Insure our Future, and others.
As a youth climate activist, Giselle has been increasingly alarmed by the “business as usual” way of thinking and acting in the shadow of the climate crisis. Growing up in Boulder County, she witnessed vibrant communities and ecosystems being drained by the oil and gas industry, and decided she had to step up. Her passion for environmental activism inspired her to work with 350 Colorado to mobilize local activists, engage with Colorado legislators, and take an active role in promoting fossil fuel divestment. Knowing that our health is directly dependent on the health of the ecosystems we inhabit, she intends to continue to stand as a voice of hope for current and future generations in the fight for a just, equitable, and sustainable future.
Salon duc Tape, a public forum sponsored by the Northern Colorado Alliance for a Livable Future, meets on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month from 7:00 — 9:00 p.m. We will continue to meet via Zoom until coronavirus variants no longer pose the serious threat that they do currently. You will need to register in advance for this salon here. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information – including a new link – about joining the salon. Please note that Zoom now requires everyone using their services to have a (free) Zoom account. If you do not currently have an account, be prepared to spend some additional time registering prior to the salon.
