AQCC Hearing on Craig Permit
March 30 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
On March 31, the Air Quality Control Commission will be holding a virtual public hearing on the air pollution operating permit for the Craig coal-fired power plant, here’s the notice, https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NG6Fpr5fVSo4JMCw2MiU_pEAbMkgg0Xj/view?usp=sharing.
Craig is a huge coal-fired power plant that’s primarily owned and operated by Tri-State Generation and Transmission. Although Tri-State has made some commitments to retiring the plant’s three units, full retirement won’t happen until 2030. Also, Tri-State remains heavily dependent on coal-fired generation and coal-fired power purchases, which are increasingly costing its rural electric co-op customers.
This presents an opportunity to keep the pressure on the AQCC to make earlier coal-fired power plant retirements a priority, as well as an opportunity to keep the pressure on Tri-State to deliver more aggressive action to transition from fossil fuels.
Wild Earth Guardians put together the attached background/talking points that may be helpful for folks who are interested in engaging in the hearing. Hope folks can attend, we definitely need to continue to impress upon the Commission that earlier action to retire coal is necessary to meet our statewide greenhouse gas reduction goals.
